From its inception in 1987, Shepherd Wellness has offered support and assistance to persons infected and affected by HIV/AIDS in an atmosphere of acceptance and understanding. Our mission affirms that "Shepherd Wellness Community is a safe, compassionate Community empowering people affected by HIV/AIDS to live with dignity in the spirit of wellness."

The need for SWC services has grown as new medical treatments have enabled people with HIV/AIDS to live longer. In recent years, Shepherd Wellness has focused on helping people maintain their quality of life as they live with the disease. Shepherd Wellness' strength lies in commitment of our members to continue working together to support HIV/AIDS affected persons and the growing number of long-term survivors. The goals of SWC are to:

• provide safe and secure opportunities for individual and group support through social interaction;
  
• ensure that the basic human needs of food, clothing and shelter are provided to maintain a dignified life for those in need;
  
• educate and inform regarding HIV-related issues;
  
• nurture an atmosphere of spiritual and personal development and growth;
  
• support and nurture those affected by HIV/AIDS, especially families and caregivers;
  
• engender self-sufficiency;
  
• promote healthy lifestyles;
  
• advocate for our members and help them navigate the maze of social, legal, government, and charitable institutions confronting them;
  
• provide a forum for physicians and HIV/AIDS researchers and act as liaison between them and our members.
  
• promote compliance with the rigid drug regimens now keeping the disease in check;
  
• provide van transportation to assure those infected with HIV/AIDS can access SWC activities and other AIDS services.
